Avignon - Pont du Gard

Saturday June 7th cont.
Still hot & sunny :)

After a nice light lunch it was time to prepare (pack sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, camera, water etc) for the next excursion to Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge that crosses the Gard River in Southern France.

This aqueduct was constructed by the Romans in the 1st century AD, is 49 metres high & could carry 200 million litres of water/day & is now one of the most famous tourist destinations in Southern France. I bet your are amazed by the sheer volume of my knowledge today! Thank goodness for excellent local guides on our tours & a brief coverage in the daily newsletter to jog my memory :)

Here are some of my photos of the bridge & river below:

It was quite a walk from the coach parking area to the aqueduct, but well worth it.

Next the coach took us to the small Roman town of Uzes, a beautiful ancient village which now has a population of 4,000.

After a very long, but enjoyable tour we arrived back at the ship about 6pm. So just time for  quick shower & change before heading off to dinner. More about our beautiful evening in Avignon later.
