Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Wednesday June 18th 2014

We set sail last evening at 7pm for Amsterdam & now it is 12 noon & we are cruising the Rhine - Amsterdam Canal, nearing our docking spot in Amsterdam.

The weather gods have started to turn against us as it is cool & very overcast with predicted showers this afternoon. At least our canal tour is in covered boats.

So a relaxing morning with a later than normal breakfast, beginning to organise our packing & an information session on Amsterdam, disembarkation & afternoon tours by Emma our tour director.

That was followed by a supposed snack in the German (although we are now in The Netherlands) tradition of Fruhschoppen. This so called snack consisted of huge varieties of sausages, large pretzels, other unidentifiable meats with mustards, horseradish, sauces etc - all served with a traditional German beer & shots of Peach Schnapps & Jaegermaster (? spelling). The schnapps was a bit rough so I had the Jaegermaster, for medicinal purposes only. Am hoping it will kill what ever bugs that are persistently  lurking in my throat & chest!

Needless to say, lunch is out of the question today, although it is still being served in the dining room.

Tomorrow we depart the AMACello at 9AM & are transferred to our hotel, The Marriot in Amsterdam, where we spend 2 nights before joining the AMAVerde on Saturday afternoon for our 14 night cruise, Amsterdam to Budapest. Although we are excited to begin the next stage of our journey, we will also be very sad to say goodbye to our new friends we have travelled with since Monte Carlo on June 1st. Jenny, Richard, Judy & John are heading to Paris for a few days then having a stop over in Asia before heading back to Australia. Jan & Gisele are heading to Belgium for a few weeks to visit relatives, then back to SA just after we head home. We have already made plans for a reunion in a few months so that should be fun. Will certainly miss those guys on our next cruise though :(

As we have a late excursion, farewell dinner, finish packing etc tonight, I will post this now and cover the remainder of today tomorrow maybe.
